From 1937 until the mid-1990s, Covenant World Mission in Africa meant Congo (Zaire). In 1996-1997 civil war in Congo resulted in the evacuation of all the Covenant missionaries. As continuing political instability delayed their return to Congo, the missionaries began to sense God’s leading to new places of service in Africa where people had not yet had an opportunity to accept Jesus as their Savior and Lord. These missionaries have returned to Africa and entered into new partnerships with established agencies and national churches.

Today, in addition to continuing our continuing partnership with the Congo Covenant Church, the Covenant has resident career missionaries in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Equatorial Guinea. In each of these countries we work in partnership with established missions and national churches. As partners we are able to work with others to share the gospel and plant churches while not having to establish a large infrastructure.

A new development in the last several years has been the establishment of Covenant Churches in Sudan, Ethiopia, and Kenya. The churches in Sudan and Ethiopia started through the influence of South Sudanese refugees in the U.S. who shared the news of the Covenant with their family and friends back home. Today there are 220 churches with 35,500 members in Sudan and 30 churches with another 5,000 members amongst the South Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia. The four Covenant churches in Kenya were started by Kenyans in the U.S. who became part of Covenant Churches and then returned home to Kenya and planted Covenant churches.

What is God saying to us through all of this? How and where is He leading us? We are not sure where all He is leading, but we are confident that He is in charge. The following Vision and Mission statements have helped us clarify the direction we are sensing.

OUR VISION
Going with God’s Movement in Africa

OUR MISSION
To discern and respond to God’s movement in Africa in cooperation with others, using the gifts and resources that He provides.  The working out of this vision and mission into more specific Goals and Objectives is taking place in each country.
